Partnership serves up another successful team tennis league

Alex Picot Trust Ladies Team Tennis

As the Championships at Wimbledon get underway we're focusing our attention on the tennis action a little closer to home.

Andrew Le Cheminant recently joined the members of Caesarean Tennis Club to celebrate another successful Alex Picot Trust Ladies Team Tennis League.

In total, 70 ladies took part in the weekly matches from April to June with 32 playing in the finals on 27th June and 39 attending the presentation evening.

Handing out the prizes, Andrew Le Cheminant, Director of Alex Picot Trust, said:

“We’re very pleased to support the Ladies Team Tennis League which has become a highlight on the Club’s calendar, providing regular competitions for the members to enjoy. It's always a pleasure to support our community through backing sport programmes like this and we're particularly pleased to be involved in supporting the League during the Club's 150th anniversary year. Congratulations to all the players.”

Ladies Captain, Gillian Samson said:

"This year is the 150th Anniversary of the Caesarean Tennis Club. Tennis is an amazing sport for women. In the very early days, tennis was really the first game that allowed ladies to take part in something a bit more energetic than Croquet. It allowed them to socialise with men in an acceptable environment and perhaps show off their prowess. Why else would they play in the full kit of corsets, long dresses with sleeves, stockings and high heeled shoes. There has been a greater evolution of women’s tennis since the late 1800’s than men, from being the very genteel social players of the 19th Century to the fiercely competitive young women touring the world, chasing the big prize money and earning 6 figure endorsement and sponsorship monies.

Today at the Caesarean we have strong women, strong players, some fiercely competitive, but most of all women who have built up strong bonds between friends because of their common love of the sport. The Caesarean Ladies Team Tennis League epitomises this. Great tennis, at times fiercely competitive, but after the game is over finds everyone sharing food with friends and even having the odd glass of Prosecco!"

The second ladies team tennis league of 2017 will commence in August.
