After successfully bidding for the ‘mystery tortoise’ in the 2023 Durrell Tortoise Takeover auction, we commissioned local A-level student, Erin Woodward, to help us to bring it to life.
Following an extensive briefing period where Erin consulted with the board of directors on possible themes and designs, a final design was agreed that would bring the sculpture to life and echo the story of Alex Picot Trust as one of Jersey’s longest standing trust companies.
Taking into account the heritage of Alex Picot Trust and its true community focus; the brief also referenced the longevity of client and staff relationships held dear to the firm over 139 years; the Jersey focus of the business incorpating the national flag and other notable maritime flavoured landmarks and historical imagery. While, the overriding success story of the Jersey trust company is told through the design and vibrant finish of the hand painted sculpture.
“We are thrilled to be in a position to offer this opportunity to Erin and enable her to create a totally unique sculpture for our reception space. Erin’s design celebrates our heritage and longevity, telling the story of our community involvement throughout our 139-year history. Once completed, the sculpture will be on public display, serving as a beautiful focal point for staff and visitors to enjoy.
“Our engagement with local schools is mostly focussed upon providing careers advice, work experience and career opportunities to students and this project has been an extension of that. It has been a wonderful way to extend Alex Picot Trust’s integration into the wider community through our support for the unique Durrell auction, demonstrating our commitment not only financially but also in providing opportunities for emerging talent.”
“A huge thank you to Erin for all her efforts and we can’t wait to see the finished sculpture.”
The mystery tortoise was presented in the auction as a blank canvas for the new owner to decide how to decorate it. Alex Picot Trust created an opportunity for an aspiring local artist to take on the project as part of its community engagement commitment.
